The collar-style necklace is part of our
Cell Cycle line, a collection inspired by the complex forms of radiolarians. These microscopic creatures grow intricate mineral exoskeletons in which pattern is integral to structure. The mathematical basis for the Cell Cycle line is a computer simulation of spring meshes. We created interactive software to morph, twist and subdivide each design, transforming a simple hexagonal mesh into a complexly patterned structure.
The collar is built up layer by layer in strong but slightly flexible nylon plastic using selective laser sintering, a kind of 3D printing. The pieces are polished until smooth, but they retain a delicate texture from the printing process. These intricate forms would be impossible to create using traditional manufacturing methods.
